There seems to be a basic fact about child-raising that many books on the subject seem to ignore: every child is different. So Dr. Cheyette counsels parents that they do not need to feel helpless when their child shows extreme anger, panic, excessive worry, tantrums and “melt-downs”, or when they see their child avoid stressful situations, or seem unable to solve problems that arise in daily life. Quite often these are symptoms of anxiety. Dr. Cheyette teaches children how to recognize and control their feelings so they can keep their cool and feel confident around family and friends. As many of these children also respond well to new ways of parenting, Dr. Cheyette works with their parents to identify “triggers” and change parenting patterns.
